Pain

What is Pain?
Pain is a distressing feeling often caused by intense or damaging stimuli. Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage. Pain motivates the individual to withdraw from damaging situations, to protect a damaged body part while it heals, and to avoid similar experiences in the future.

Most pain resolves once the noxious stimulus is removed and the body has healed, but it may persist despite removal of the stimulus and apparent healing of the body. Sometimes pain arises in the absence of any detectable stimulus, damage or disease. The ability to experience pain is essential for protection from injury, and recognition of the presence of injury.

Prostaglandins (PGs) are synthesized at the site of stimulus from arachidonic acid of membrane phospholipids. PGs work as messengers to the brain giving message in the form of pain inflammation or fever, depending upon nature of stimuli. Prostaglandins are synthesized by through COX (Cyclo oxygenase I and II) pathways. Gastric mucus (Stomach) lining is having Prostaglandin E2 as one of the major constituent which protects stomach from acids of gastric juice.

  • 1. Duration (Acute or Chronic – Arthritis, Neuropathic, Idiopathic etc)
  • 2. Nociceptive (Thermal, Mechanical, Chemical, Polymodal)
  • 3. Neuropathic (Burning, Tingling, Electrical, Stabbing or Pins and needles)
